Work Study

Our work-study program is an opportunity to delve more deeply into your spiritual practice. Spend time amongst people living a yogic lifestyle in an urban setting. This is a chance to learn new techniques to function more fully in your life. These techniques include:

Karma Yoga
Hatha Yoga
Meditation
Chanting

Mentor
Diana and her mentor Mandy

Work-Study students will perform seva or Karma Yoga, the yoga of action. These tasks can range from cleaning to watching the front office. This service is in support of Chi-Town Shakti’s community. While doing seva the student is encouraged to practice japa or mantra repetition as a way of transforming mundane tasks into spiritual growth. As a student, you will commit to a total of 8 hours of seva per week, Thursday night community meditation class each week and attend the morning meditation practice Guru Gita twice each week.

An applicant must make a commitment of 1 to 3 months, and seva hours must be agreed upon before acceptance.

During your commitment you can attend all studio classes (provided there is space) free of charge and attend workshops at half-price. You will also receive a faculty mentor who will meet with you every other week and help guide you along your yogic path.

We teach classical Hatha Yoga in the Shambhava tradition. Shambhava Yoga is a meditative style of yoga and is designed to prepare the body for sitting meditation. The practitioner is encouraged to develop an inward focus, breath awareness, and an understanding of correct postural alignment.

Shambhava meditation offers a variety of practices for many types of seekers. Mantra repetition and breath awareness are our main practices. This practice brings attention to the breath and the movement and awareness of spiritual energy in the body.

We are currently accepting applications for Winter 2008-2009. Email
