Aparigraha means non-grasping. It’s the fifth of yoga’s Yamas, the relational guides for how we meet ourselves and others. It asks us to hold life with an open hand: non-hoarding, non-clinging, trusting there will be enough. Grasping usually grows from fear and scarcity. Yoga names the root of that fear abhiniveśa: our clinging to life as we know it, and the fear of losing it.
Outwardly, aparigraha loosens our grip on people, expectations and outcomes, allowing others the freedom to be who they are. Inwardly, it asks us to release who we used to be, who we “should” be, and the timeline we thought our lives would follow.
Yin gives us a direct way to practice it. In a long hold, reaching for more range doesn’t get you there faster. The tissue responds to time spent in a passive hold. Each shape is a chance to notice where you’re gripping (the jaw, the breath, the idea of how deep your stretch should be) and what happens when you let it go. In Five Element Theory, autumn is the season of Metal, of the lungs and the exhale: taking in what nourishes and releasing what’s finished. We’ll work with that rhythm through the chest, shoulders and arms, reharmonizing our energy.
In this workshop, we’ll spend time in long, supported holds and with this question: what are you holding onto, and what would it feel like to loosen your grip?
Open to all, no experience or prior workshop required.
